Make a beautiful sign for your door – Bezalel style! The chalutzim (early Israeli pioneers) believed that Israel should have a national art style that reflected the diversity of Jewish immigrants to the land. The style, “Bezalel,” named after the biblical figure Bezalel ben Uri, is a mix of European and Middle Eastern and was taught at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts (now the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design) in Jerusalem.

Students at the Bezalel School carved sculptures from the wood of Israeli olive trees. They also made ritual objects such as candle sticks, Kiddush cups, and seder plates, often from metal. Bezalel students designed posters to tell the rest of the world about Israel.
