My grandfather Jacob came to America in 1903 from Rumania. After attempting a number of jobs, he settled on selling garlic from a pushcart on the Lower East Side.
One day, when he went to the dock to buy his garlic supply - he was informed that the entire shipload was flooded. So, he bought the entire lot, rented a warehouse where he dried it and then ground it into powder. And thus "J Raphael and Sons", Importers, Grinders and Distributers of Spices" was created.
